In the third playing of this game, can Novos win the John Elders trophy for the first time?

Since 2015, Novocastrians and the Old Novocastrians Association (ONA) have played a memorial match to toast the memory of John Elders. Last year's event was hugely successful with hundreds turning out to watch on a Bank Holiday Tuesday.

Old Novos lifted the trophy for the second time after a 39-7 victory over a Novos 'A' side.

We continue in the hope that this will be an annual event in between Christmas and New Year, on the closest Saturday. Therefore, this year the match will take place on Saturday 30th of December at 14:00. The bar will be open all day and a buffet will be kindly provided for by the ONA.

Please feel free to invite anyone into this event who may be interested in attending in a playing or spectating capacity.

John taught at the school from 1957-82 and again from 1992-96 on a part time basis. John captained Novos from 1959-61 and as Head Coach, in the mid 1970's, helped build the foundations to create a hugely successful era for the rugby club.

An inspiration to many in the North East, the Old Novocastrians Association and Novos RFC decided to team together, to pay our respects to a great man in the only way we knew how - through rugby.

The game will be played at Sutherland Park (Novos RFC, Benton) on Saturday 30th December with a 14:00 K.O. The ONA will play against a Novos 'A' side in honour of John. After the game we'll head upstairs into Sir Arthur Sutherland's Clubhouse to have many a beer, whilst we continue the festivities of the season!
