As with many of the teams we had some disruption caused by the Metro being off in certain places. However, with a reasonable warm up completed we ran out ready for battle.
Rockcliff were a big set of lads and at the first scrum the ref asked our front row for their boarding passes as some of us went flying up in the air ! The subs noticed that the opposition were using some kind of CCTV device (I-pad?)to record the scrums. I noticed that they never turned it on when they were not having a scrum.
The game itself was very competitive all over the field. We won a reasonable share of the ball but often dropped the last pass when a try was on the plate.
We scored a couple of cracking tries when we decied to up the pace of the game and held onto our passes. Coller dotted down along with Bollado, Bass and Merrett... Bollado adding two cons. The score was 24-14 in a game that could really have gone either way.
We had some injury trouble with Steve Neil having his teeth rearranged, Jonny Coller having his neck walked over and Gav Evans crumbling when he had to play hooker in a scrum. We were undiscplined at times, marched 10 on two occasions and Ben Walker received a yellow card for cheating near the line.
We will play a lot better than this but managed a bonus point win against opposition that will be a handful for any side that goes there.
Despite other peoples thoughts, the ref did well. He was a young lad who could at least keep up with play. He was some what critised by many but it was not him that dropped the ball, got injured or needed help putting on his boots. He made good decisions based on what he saw.
We are making progress as a club and there are many positives about our play. However, we must not rest as we have achieved nothing as of yet. Lets all get to training this week... 36 at Thursdays session, can we hit 40 ? Well done lads, we got the bonus point win in a game I thought we may lose.
