In a match that counted as the county cup plate semi final and the league, Blyth came away with a 23-7 win in difficult conditions.
The day did not start well as Eion Scullion twisted his knee in the warm up. Phone calls were made to retrieve Jack Callaghan from the 2's game at Northern. In the meantime, Rich Harrison started at scrum half.
The match itself was very even with Novos negating Blyths rolling maul tactics. However, Blyths scrum was edging the battle up front.
Blyth could not get away from us despite dominating possession and we were in this game, tackling our hearts out. Blyths frustrations were plain to see with a punch here and a punch there. Ollie Eaves and a Blyth player were yellow carded, despite Ollie basically being attacked ?!
Jack Callaghan came on at nine, although it must be said that Harrison done a great job when called upon. Callaghan scored our only try of the game, making it 18-7, game on.
The real difference between the two sides was that Blyth took their opportunities to score. Novos had a load of chances but were unable to convert. However, when Blyth were in our 22m they always seem to come away with points.
They did so again just before the end when Blyth scored a try, which led to more aggression as a Novos player dropped on the try scorer.
More progress made in this game, given that Blyth drove in 5 rolling mauls the last time we played them. Shows that the hard work put in at training works.
We hope that Blyth now go on and win the cup as they are the best side in the cup competition and are doing real well in the league.
