Seaham cried off on Wednesday night despite asking for the fixture back in June. Thankfully, Morpeth 2's stepped up but it was a bit concerning when a few friends from county rugby turned up. However, discussions between both sides ensured that a safe, fun and meaningful game could take place.
We struggled a bit at times against some players who were a bit more physical and had more experience but our lads got stuck in. Thought our lineout worked well throughout and Ben Rodgers throwing was excellent. Matt Dawson, playing against many of his ex Morpeth 1's mates led the lineout well and looked confident in contact in a return from a dislocated shoulder.
It was on the loose that we excelled as Harry Mason, Josh Hood, Bart Farrier and Ben Welsh on debut were everywhere and we turned over Morpeth's ball at the breakdown on several occasions. Morpeth had more of the ball and we got plenty of opportunity to practice some defence. Rhys Merlane and Greg Abibu put in some big hits and we scrambled well.
Josh Hood scored our only try before going off with a knee injury that didn't look too promising. He was joined pitch side by Harry Mason who had a promising debut before limping off.
Was great to see club debuts for Matt Dawson, Jack Povey, Rohan Cook, Garry Whittle, Arthur Wallis and Ryan Evans in his first ever game of rugby. Only topped by senior debuts for so many of our youngsters - graduating colts in Ben Rodgers, Joe Kapur, Bart Farrier, Jack Bolam, Zac Smith and Rhys Merlane all played. In addition, amazing to see some reconnecting ex colts in Ben Welsh, Ethan Morton and Beau Cooke.
A great effort on the pitch was continued throughout the night with an amazing atmosphere in the bar as we partied into the early hours. A good playing experience, lesson learned and time well spent together after the game.
Next week the group play Seghill 1's at home at 1300.
Get down and see how much progress they have made.
