Novos 3 started of 2015 with a friendly fixture away to high flying Houghton 2s.
A strong squad of 18 made the trip to Durham and following a 30 minutes warm up, the Vos were up for the game.
Novos defended with the sun at their backs in the first half hoping by the second half the sun would drop behind the houses.
Houghton started strongly and Novos appeared to be still in the changing room as they were dominated in the first 10 minutes. Houghton scored first following some good recycling which allowed their 1st team centre to crash over the conversion was missed.
Novos went about wasting several chances to score before John Marshall tried to stop the ball going out for a Houghton lineout, threw a blind pass to Houghton’s centre who raced away to score under the posts. The conversion made it 12-0, Novos decided to play simple rugby to get back into the game.
Novos scored next through slick simple passing in the back line which lead to flying fullback David Marshall scoring to the right of the posts. A Houghton player should have seen yellow for the horror high tackle as Marshall scored. Joe Carr added the conversion to make it 12-7.
Novos began to dominate and created other chances to score but somehow managed to mess them up.
Oliver Dearden got the ball on half way raced up the pitch before offloading to Joe Carr. Carr who doesn’t quite have the pace due to carrying xams weighed passed to Ian Pratt as he was tackled. Pratt drove forwards with two men holding him went down before quickly getting up and passing to fly half John Marshall. Marshall passed the ball wide where outside centre Tom Burford had the line at his mercy decided to pass and threw the ball 5 meters forward.
With the last play of the half Houghton had a lineout just outside their 22. Houghton won the ball and off the top tried to feed their scrum half but skipper Ian Pratt had other ideas, as he broke through a gap in the lineout and intercepted the ball before drawing his man and offloading to James Desmond to power his way over the line. Carr missed the conversion, half time 12-12.
Novos started the second half off in top gear they were dominating all over the pitch Houghton were hanging on until Novos took a tap penalty in their own 22 following lots of slick passing the ball went the full width of the pitch and Joe Carr showed a return of his pace scored in the corner. The conversion was missed by Carr 12-17.
Novos once again ripped Houghton apart through the backs, David Marshall put Andy Moses into space and he raced away 30 meters out to score under the posts. Joe Carr added the conversion to make it 12-24 after 55 minutes.
Chris Brown came on for Will Moses, which meant a reshuffle in the pack. At this point in the game and will all of the momentum Novos should have destroyed Houghton but instead they decided to stop playing.
Novos conceded two sloppy tries trough poor defending and decision making. 24-24 after 65 minutes. Ed Walker and Andy Forbes came on for Kristian Tengleson and Tom Buford respectively.
With 10 minutes to go Novos got a penalty just outside the Houghton 22 Pratt and Carr agreed to go for the 3 points, which Carr slotted coolly over.
24-27 after 70 minutes, Novos had reawaken and following individual brilliance by David Marshall who beat about 5 men to score to extend Novos lead to 8 points. Joe Carr was unable to add the conversion from a difficult position.
With 6 minutes to go it was 24-32 Novos just need to keep calm over the next 6 minutes to win the game.
Following some poor communication/listening in the defensive line Houghton scored under the posts through their 1st team centres 4th try. The conversion was added 31-32 with 4 minutes to go…..
For the next four minutes Novos were camped in their half and with 2 minutes to go were ripped apart, the Houghton winger was going to score…… out of nowhere David Marshall appeared to put in a amazing tackle to put him in touch.
Des decided to call a 3 man line 5 meters out, luckily Mike Cousins was quick to react to secure the ball and David Marshall kicked the ball clear.
Following more good defending on the other side of the pitch Novos turned the ball over allowing James Desmond to shin the ball into Touch giving Novos the win by a point.
There were some excellent performances young scrumhalf Jonny Lowes making his senior debut looks a very good player. A slightly older Tom Wilson Snr was immense in defence and carried the ball well in attack. Andrew Gardiner was all over the park stealing balls, Oliver Dearden carried the ball well. Man of the Match has to go to David Marshall who was a different class scoring two tries, creating chances for team mates and making over 20 tackles many of them try saving.
Next week the 3s are back in league action as the host Berwick.
