A strong performance but in the end Eccles defence held strong

It was a good day for rugby at Sutherland Park, the sun was out and the ground was firm, but a strong wind blowing straight across the pitch would make for an interesting game. Having lost to Eccles away from home earlier in the season Novos were determined to right the wrongs with a strong performance. Fanny Fouin saw herself return to the backrow after several months with the backs, while Louise Partridge and Amelia Magistrali were making their first starts for Novos.

The game kicked off and it was all red, black and white as Novos dominated every aspect of the game and had Eccles pinned in their own 22. Nowhere was our dominance more obvious than the scrum which had them marching back at a rate of knots. Novos were doing everything right but some outstanding defence from Eccles somehow kept us short of the line. After 20 minutes Emma Nichol slotted a penalty to make it 3-0. Still the bombardment came with no reward and even when Eccles had a player sent to the bin Novos still fell short of the whitewash. With just minutes left in the first half Eccles bounced on a loose ball and their Scotland International winger was able to run it in from 70 meters. The conversion was kicked and Novos trailed 7-3 at the break.

Not panicking Novos knew they were the better side and a little more composure would surely get us over the line. The second half started well and a good tactical kick off saw Novos regain possession and build the pressure again. Much like the first half Novos were unable to turn pressure into points, until Elle Bloor went storming through the middle to produce quick ball and some clinical handling saw Emily Oliver touch down to make it 8-7 to Novos. As the game continued the physicality began to take its toll with every breakdown a fight for survival. With 15 minutes to go another loose ball gave the Eccles 15 half a chance, which was all she needed as she scored from 60m out. 12-8 with over 10 minutes left Novos were still in the game. Despite determination rarely seen on the rugby pitch and a constant bombardment of the line Novos were unable to score and the game finished 12-8 to Eccles.

The team, absolutely heartbroken, should hold their head up high. Despite an awesome performance from the entire squad sometimes it’s just not your day. Player of the Match Fanny Fouin was exceptional and well supported by her team mates. Back of the match went to Helen Kane. Skipper Amelia Neagle broke her own record for largest multiple head bumps, sure to make a Fran esk first impression at her new job on Wednesday.

This was our last home game of the season and we would like to thank everyone who has come down to support us this season!
