With Sutherland Park looking resplendent on a mild autumnal afternoon, a vociferous crowd gathered in eager anticipation of a double-bill of women’s rugby. Visitors Waterloo, long-time divisional champions, arrived in confident form, allegedly expressin

First up, the Novos development team, applauded out of the changing rooms by the senior squad. Led out by Captain Clem, in her debut at scrum half, the team spent the first half defending valiantly like seasoned pros. Strong tackling was evident across the board, with last season’s rookies Claire G and Jen A setting the tone for first timers Hannah and Lea to follow. Unfortunately the early clashes led to some facial decoration (not that type) for Kaney’s nemesis Louise, forcing her out of the action. Waterloo found no way through the middle, with some quick hands sending them wide for their only score of the half.

With Amy Lakey being uncharacteristically loud, and Clem as enthusiastic as ever, Novos began to dominate possession in the second half. Good work under the aerial ball by Cathy created chances for a strong-running Beth at 12. Highlights included Amy Lakey’s brutal handoffs, and in a farce of the like not seen since KP’s ‘grass-gate’, referee Carlos ‘The Jackel’ showed his generous side by allowing 10 minutes for a conversion attempt.

As bodies tired Waterloo broke through, initially thwarted by fantastic covering defence from the outstanding Lauren, but eventually proving too strong with further scores. Uncontested scrums failed to bring out the best of Sal, but her on-pitch wisdom was invaluable. In sum, an outstanding season debut for the development team, with several players impressing and all playing the Novos way enjoying the game. A visibly excited (not like that) Hannah was player of the match.
