It was the most perfect of days as Sutherland Park played host to Novos first league game of the year against West Brigdford.

After a tough defeat in our last match the ladies were determined to show what they could do. Novos started positively from the kick off with a strong returning run from skipper Amelia Neagle and was well supported by debutant back rower Fanny Fouin and second row Fran Mockford. Quick ball won by the forwards and clinical backs play run by Ruth Scott and Emma Nichols soon saw us break down and organised defence and Janey Eccles broke the line to score a great try. Novos continued to apply pressure with ball in hand and some excellent team offloading play lead to a second try from hard running centre Helen Kane. Novos went over for their third try 5 minutes later with Rachel Bennet showing great pace to score under the post and was converted by Emma Nichol. West Brigford didn’t go down without a fight and some tight forward play allowed them to straddle over for a score making in 17-5 at half time.

Again Novos started the second half brightly with strong forward runs and intricate back play. This gave Bennet a 1 on 1 on the outside where she was able to use her pace and get in the corner for Novos 4th try of the match. The next 20 minutes were a struggle for Novos as a string of penalties allowed Brigdford into the game and we were pinned in our own half. As the fresh legs came on with many girls only playing their second game of rugby the side still kept it’s defensive metal. With 5 minutes to go Emma Nichol made a fantastic break to score an awesome individual try which secured Novos the try bonus points.

The clocked ticked down and Novos secured a 27-5 win in their first league game of the season. A very strong performance that will give us lots of confidence heading into our first away game next weekend at division champions Waterloo.
