It was a tough time on the road for Novos this weekend as we went down 43-12 to league champions Waterloo.

It was a positive start from Novos as some excellent defence lead by Fanny Fouin kept Waterloo pinned in their own half. Despite making mistake early on Waterloo grew into the game and some slick hands gave their winger a run from the line and despite protests she was in touch the try was awarded. Much like the DMP game Novos then took 10 minutes off and some very sloppy defence allowed Waterloo to run in several more tries. But with Emma Nichol leading by example Novos gave a much better account of themselves just before half time. Unfortunately the half time score of 38-0 fully reflects Waterloo’s dominance in the first half.

The half time huddle and some sombre looking faces but an inspirational half time team talk transformed the team for the second half. The forwards lead by a strong performance from replacement Steph Claxton secured better ball and allowed centres Emma Nichol and Helen Kane to get on the front foot. Emma Nichol showed her true ability as she tore up the Waterloo defence with twinkle toes footwork and elegant handling. Soon this death defying play gave Novos the rewards they deserved as we went over for our first score of the game, coming from the one and only Nichol who converted her own score. This resurgence continued and despite 1 more undeserved try from Waterloo, Novos where totally dominant in all areas of the game. Some more great play started by makeshift scrum half Janey Eccles gave Helen Kane another try this season.

It was an incredibly spirited second half by Novos which we actually won 12-5 for a final score of 43-12. Even though the score line was disappointing it was a huge improvement from last year’s 95-0 result. We look forward to going one step further on the return fixture at Sutherland Park.

Next Sunday we take on Eccles at Sutherland Park, we hope you can get down to support us when we return to winning ways.
