Lichfield 41 – 13 Novos
The game was to be dominated by a strong wind blowing down the pitch which gave each team a significant advantage when it was at their backs.
Novos used it first and exerted pressure on the home side for long periods of the game. Despite this Lichfield showed their attacking ability in a couple of strong line breaks, one leading to their first try, against the run of play. They also managed to score the conversion.
This stirred Novos into their best period on play, the forwards carrying hard and the backs threatening to cut loose. One such attack led to the first try. A good forwards carry gave the backs some momentum to get the ball wide to Emily Oliver who ran around the cover defense to score in the corner.
This seemed to stir up the home side who attacked with renewed vigour and their attacking play led to two more scores before half time. Sandwiched in between the two score was a well-deserved penalty kick from Lauren Roberts. Half time score 17 – 8.
The second half was much harder work for Novos with the home side getting more control of the ball and dominating territory. They managed to get their forwards carrying well and gaining more momentum. But despite their lack of ball Novos deface worked really hard and kept the home side out for long periods, and when they did get some ball to attack with they still created opportunities to score. One such venture into the home side 22 led to a score for Emma Nichol, good pressure on the home line allowed the ball to be passed right for Emma to pick up the ball off her toes and stroll to the line to score. The home side scored four tries in the last 30 mins of the second half to give them a slightly flattering score line at the end.
There are many positives for the team to take forward into our next game away at West Park Leeds, so it is going to be a busy week in training as we will have our second team making their debut in the league as well, at home to Hartlepool Rovers.
