U15's make slow start to New Year
Novos, missing four of their front row regulars and playing their first rugby for almost a month, were comprehensively outplayed by Blaydon.
From the early exchanges it was clear that the visitors were below par. The home side took full advantage and almost all the first 20 minutes were played in Novos' half.
Blaydon opened the scoring within the first minute. With uncontested scrums, a put-in for the home side on half way after the kick off failed to go 10m, was quickly worked to the outside centre who slipped several tackles and scored under the posts. After 7 minutes, Novos conceded a series of penalties for handling in the ruck and being offside, then compounded their difficulties with some backchat. Forced to retreat 10m the visitors got their defensive numbers wrong and Blaydon moved the ball quickly to score on the right.
After 14 minutes Novos were again forced to commit extra players to a series of rucks around the 22 and when Blaydon moved the ball wide to the right, Novos were exposed and conceded a third try.
Novos tackling improved in the second quarter, but in contrast to the home side the backs were very static and could make no impression on Blaydon's defence. The half finished with no further scores.
Early in the second half Blaydon again applied pressure and after winning a penalty, kicked for a 5m line out. Novos defended the line out and the rucks and mauls bravely, but after persistent infringement for offside, Novos lost their flanker to the sin bin. Forced to commit a centre to the scrum Novos could do nothing to prevent an inevitable try after 7 minutes as Blaydon's backs used their extra man to good effect. Peter charged down the conversion.
Despite losing their prop to the sin bin for dissent, Blaydon continued to look dangerous and scored further tries after 12 and 24 minutes. Novos had few opportunities, with their best coming when Kieran chased a chip which turned the fullback, but was penalised for holding on as the defence arrived.
A tough start to the New Year for Novos, who have plenty to think about before their next game.
