The season may be coming to an end but it is amazing that there are still things to play for beyond the league title which is just six points away, Plate Final on Wednesday vs Percy Park before we play Aldwinians in the National Cup. Outside of those games there are still small wins - can we get to 100 pts, can we score 1000 pts, two home wins means we are unbeaten at home this season for the first time in 25 years.
Medicals are the perfect opponent, as the reality is we could lose a game and beat Acklam next week and still get promoted. However, the boys know that if they are not present physically and emotionally on Saturday Meds will beat us - home record gone. Sure we will be present and show some intent to get the job done.
Our squad is nearly back to full strength with props Johnny McSorley and Morgan Scrace expected to be back available after this weekend. Sam Evans will return from uni holidays on Sunday to play in the county under 20's match. In addition, Sam Cleife, Max Cook, George Bambrick and Harry Tankard are included in this weeks squad. It has also been great to see Darren Kelly back playing some rugby and excelling for the two's.
Playing wise the template won't change for Saturday from our earlier wins against Medicals. Keep it simple - try and dominate at set piece and play in the right areas. Although, we must try and improve our discipline - lower tackling and better decision making at the breakdown required.
The pack is pretty much been unchanged recently - the scrum has been dominant in almost every game this season. Andrew Kirton and Jonny Cotterill have been vital, two big lads working hard every scrum. So much so we saw the front row expressing themselves last week. Tom Taylor getting two intercepts and playing scrum half, David Medjigbodo-Lawson making a number of carries whilst snake hips hooker Sion Gittins scored a great try.
With the return of Harry Tankard we are able to put out a strong back row. Dylan Gittins returns to number eight after playing in the centres last week. His defence was vital against a strong Gateshead centre pairing. On the other side of play Rob Baldwin and Louis Matthews were devastating - sitting down defenders again and again. Some serious Smashed Em Bro's going on.
Cameron Wallace and Josh Farley remain at nine and ten - the pair have been instrumental this season in putting teams in their own half. Not a better pair in the league in my mind - incredible that we also have Rhys Merlane and Sam Evans in our 9/10 stocks.
Tankard's return sees him reunited with Michael Searle after a few weeks of playing back rowers in his absence. It should provide us with better balance in attack with Searle controlling the gain line and Tankard looking to create for his back three.
Sam Bird moves from fullback to left wing with the return of Sam Busby on Saturday. Bird scored an amazing try midweek for the 2's so confidence should be high. The right wing sees Max Cook return early from uni holidays. He was in great form before he headed back home.
Squad strength is shown with Ant McQuillin, George Bambrick and Sam Cleife on the bench.
So get down and support the boys as they try to get a win to make it a non starter next week for Ryton - they'd need an win away at Durham Uni, Acklam to beat us without a bonus point and a couple of hundred points swing.
Up the Vos !
