Men's Preview - 17th January

Magnus Leask16 Jan - 09:06

Rugby is back with a bang - three games ! 1's at home to Darlington, 2's hosting Alnwick and 3's travel to Blyth.

Finally, it looks like rugby is going ahead this weekend. Whilst we had two festive games over the Xmas period this is effectively our first competitive game since 13th Dec. The lads have continued to train indoors at Dame Allan's School as well as outdoor sessions when possible.

The first team host Darlington after an away win 59-22 the first week of October. The boys who played know that the game was more competitive than the score line suggests. We only pulled away in the latter part of the second half.

Squad wise, we look relatively strong despite the unavailability of a few lads, including Lewis Chater and Sam Busby who were impressive in the fixture in October. However, this is off set by the return of Harry Tankard and the availability of Cam Wallace (9) Sam Evans (10) and Josh Farley (15)

In the front row, we welcome back Morgan Scrace. The Northumbria uni student returns and effectively hasnt missed a league game due to the weather. Scrace has had a great season in what is expected to be his last for Vos before returning to Wales. The same can be said for Rob Baldwin, after his absence against Medicals was cancelled out by the weather. His physicality will be needed on what will be heavy pitches for the next few weeks.

Speaking of physicality - we are looking forward to Andrew Kirton finally getting his debut. Having joined us at Xmas from Westoe, he has been able to play in the festive games but had two league games cancelled. He will bring much-needed experience to our young pack as well as gain line physicality.

With the conditions expected we have decided to go with three forwards on the bench. We are blessed that the likes of Sion Gittins, Rob Baldwin, Louis Matthews and Dylan Gittins are all capable of playing anywhere. As such, Ant McQuillin puts the 16 shirt on which is well deserved. Powerhouse Louis Matthews dons the 17 shirt - incredible to have a player of his calibre on the bench. The final shirt goes to Jez Hunt who just couldnt be left out based on attendance to training, lineout ability and the fact that he had an excellent game last time out against Darlington.

The 2's have picked up a rearranged league fixture vs Alnwick Lions - huge game for the boys. Look out for regular 1's playing in David Medjigbodo-Lawson, Jonny Allton, Owen Hayton and SImeon Archibald all starting in the pack. In additon, Max Cook and Adam Lambert are in the back three.

In addtion, we look forward to Ollie Forster getting a game while back from uni. He is joined by fellow Old Allanian Ben Walker who got man of the match in his last outing for the 2's.

We wish Sam Brooks well in what is his senior debut. The Northumberland U18's centre will start on the wing. Talented young lad who I am sure will progress through to the 1's in the near future.

The 3's travel to Blyth after a long break - Rich Zabrocki leading the boys in the absence of Ian Wood. Great to see teh Thompson brothers back involved, Finn Carlin playing whilst back from uni as well as Dennis Osagie having his first game for the club.
