Tynedale Social 7's Shield Winners

Magnus Leask15 Jun - 14:38

Once again we had two sides out at Tynedale 7's with The Unloveables and The Undateables representing Novocastrians with distinction.

The two important games were our final pool game vs Northern whereby the winner would progress to the shield final. Then the actual final versus an experienced and physical Tynedale Old Boys side.

Against Northern it went down to the last play with Northern making it 28-26. However, in next to no space Rhys Merlane fielded the kick off, spun down the short side and went the length for a 35-26 win.

That put us into the Shield Final against a strong Tynedale side. We went with our biggest lads first up, trying to match their physically and then big on the gas in the last 7 mins. It worked perfectly as Louis Matthews put us 14-12 up at half time.

The game got a bit spicy toward the end with two seperate tussles before the end of the game. However, Sam Cleife, Ewan Dryden and Rhys Merlane all scored in the second half to secure the Shield in a 33-19 win.

Thank you to Richie Gledson and his team of volunteers for putting on another great event. Also, big thanks to the refs that did a great job all afternoon.

We all donned our traditional Hawaiian shirts and headed into the beerfest - hit the dance floor, food stalls and bars before heading into a packed toon. Great memories created and shared with the likes of Ewan Strachan, Joe Ball and Harry Jones who were playing for One Ring To Rue The Maul.

Up the Vos - see you all on Tuesday 1st July at 1900 for pre season.
