Great to see ex colts Theo Mouille, Ewan Strachan and Beau Cooke reconnect with the club and play some rugby. All three were outstanding all afternoon with high skill levels and commitment in contact.
Injured first teamer Carl Ferguson gave up his time to manage the lads, much appreciated.
The lads played some great rugby winning two games and losing two. As per usual we like to do things the Novos Way - using only forwards whilst other clubs used their entire squads. It is set up as 7's played across the pitch so it is a great opportunity for our forwards to get some contact work done.
We learned a lot throughout the day and there were some great performances - Rhys Sporwart showing his physicality at scrum time and round the park. Loved watching Ant McQuillan and Sean Hamil grow in confidence with their contact work. Tom Storey was excellent with some very strong carries and a great work ethic. Johnny McSorley played a lot of mins and produced the best moment of the day cartwheeling a North Shields tackler. To a man we all had positive experiences with Adam Longstaff and Christian Selkirk showing moments of class.
Player of the day was Theo Mouille - we are hoping that Theo will continue his reconnection with the club after a year away from rugby since finishing his colts season. A physical presence, highly skilled and committed in the tackle - Theo showed that he should be in and around the first team squad.
We eventually finished fourth but got a lot out of the day including learning about the new tackle height laws. Players definitely struggled at times and realise that there needs to be a lot of adjusting techniques at training. Improving alignment, footwork and getting lower pre contact required to stay below the sternum.
Well done boys - see you all at training and please update your availability on Heja.
