Wigton 0, Novos 68 - Into the Quarters

Magnus Leask28 Apr - 21:01

Novos booked a date with Sunderland after a convincing away win at Wigton - our finest performance of the season so far.

It was a strange feeling getting into cars on Saturday, heading to play an opponent we knew nothing about. Chris Ward providing the historic info that we hosted Wigton in March of 1990 a 6-9 loss. Going on to add that we last played away back in Oct 1988 in a 6-4 win - two penalties sealing the victory.

We were surprised when we saw Wigton warming up - youthful and full of running. Game on !

Wigton had won their league at a canter and started on fire - claiming the kick off and driving into our 22m. They were camped on our line and should've scored and would've it wasn't a huge turnover from Ben Jubb. The steal allowed us to drive down the field from the boot of Josh Farley - which he was to do again and again in the first half.

Our pack were dominating set piece - David Medjigbodo-Lawson, Sion Gittins and Ant McQuillin putting Wigton on the back foot and they struggled to launch plays from any scrum. We on the other hand had a great platform and we shot blind - we then hammered away at the Wigton goal line. Denied by good defence we moved the ball as Jubb hit Farley out the back of Michael Searle. Max Cook had worked of his wing to score the opening try, converted by Farley for 7-0.

With the lineout functioning well from Sion Gittins accurate throwing, Jeremy Hunt and George Bambrick dominating the air we were quickly back on attack. Again, we went to our pick and go game - eventually the ball found Sam Cleife out wide. In a last ditch tackle he led the ball back in field for Sam Busby to pick up and stroll in. Conversion added again by Farley for 14-0.

Wigton were right in the game and should've scored but again did not take the opportunity. They were punished as Farley booted us down field with a 50/22. After a penalty, Rhys Merlane took the quick tap and Dylan Gittins found Busby with a huge miss pass. 19-0 to Vos.

Our opponents were still fighting and in a competitive 20 mins the score could perhaps have been 19-12. Instead, George Bambrick secured another important steal in our 22m after a great chop tackle by Farley. Another Farley kick, this time a banana kick out us on the 5m line. From the lineout there were some silky handling from Rob Baldwin, Searle and Farley as Jubb went in untouched. Two points added as we went 26-0 up with 25 mins gone.

Our next try was a bit soft - Farley pinned Wigton back into their 22. They looked to carry off the set piece but Searle had other ideas, ripping the ball away from the carrier and carrying a couple of lads over the line. Farley added the extras for 33-0.

The game was high tempo and an early change was made - Sol Mak coming on for Ant McQuillin. We had dominated the early scrums and did not want that advantage to drop of. As such, Mak, Gittins and Medjigbodo-Lawson won a tighthead after a huge scrum. Not finished there, Midjigbodo-Lawson sat down a defender with a huge bump. We then moved the ball back down the blindside for Sion Gittins to put Max Cook in space. Beautiful nudge past the last defender and then he won the race to the ball for a 38-0 half time score.

Had to be the best 40 mins of rugby we had played - almost perfection after little or no errors and some great balanced rugby. In an effort to not drop off we subbed on Morgan Scrace, Tom Westgarth, Louis Matthews and Lewis Chater.

We opened the second half scoring off a lineout turnover - we moved the ball to Jubb who had Sam Busby and Max Cook outside. However, great work ethic from Sam Cleife to get off his wing and pop up in the middle to run it in. 43-0 and no sign of let up from the Novos lads.

Our talented back rowers were enjoying the battle around the park, not to be outdone by our front rowers. Westgarth made a big turnover, again denying Wigton a chance to go on attack. A strong carry from Rob Baldwin saw us work our way down field and he hit Searle in stride. Another big run and a great offload as Cleife raced in for his second to make it 48-0.

From the kick off we scored straight away - Farley deciding not to kick on this occasion. Instead stepping a few defenders before putting Cleife away down the touchline. Lovely moment as Dylan Gittins recovered Clef's kick ahead and brother Sion, then scored out wide for 53-0.

It was all one way traffic now as Seb Shilling and Brandon Gilbert entered the fray and a couple of other lads rotated back on. Similiar to the last score Merlane found Cleife down the blindside. We recycled the ball and Jubb put Busby in space - big dummy led to him making a line break before unselfishly feeding Chater for the try out wide. 58-0.

Wigton just couldn't get any momentum in the game as we continued to thwart each attack. This time it was Shilling with the steal and we kicked the ball down field. A wayward kick in return was punished by Busby as he rolled back the years beating several defenders before putting Jubb in for his second of the day. 63-0.

Our final try came from a big line bust by Matthews but he managed to get so far he was somewhat isolated. Big clear out from Chater of all people and we moved the ball for Brand Gilbert to put in Searle to make the final score 68-0.

Massive shout out to the ref who was outstanding - possibly the nest we have had all season. Let the game flow when needed, excellent decision making at the breakdown.

Cheers to the Wigton lads in a game that flattered us as we took chance after chance whilst you did not take your opportunities which really affected your momentum and confidence at times. Great hospitality and great to catch up with the father of ex Novos player Oli Richardson in the bar. We wish you well on your venture into level 6 next year and will be keeping an eye out for your Sunderland fixtures.

Our lads - what a performance, our best of the season. However, bar two lads we could probably say this was the strongest side we have put out all season. Did exactly what we asked for at training - reducing our unforced error account and having a more balance attack - playing at the right end of the field. Massive thanks to all those that made the trek in support, especially a few of the Dads who drove so lads could enjoy a beer afterwards.

Huge week ahead as we are tasked with finding a way to defeat unbeaten Sunderland. However, the squad looks almost as strong as Saturday as a couple of lads go out due to unavailability but we welcome back in Tom Taylor and Darren Kelly who were absent from Saturdays win. The group knows that we have been competitive in both fixtures despite two losses. If we keep 15 men on the pitch we will surely once again give them a run for their money after two narrow defeats this season.

Hope to see you all there - Up the Vos !
