Simple plan heading into the game executed perfectly from the kick off. We keep the ball for a long period with Andrew Kirton and Rob Baldwin getting us over the gain line. The dancing feet of Josh Farley then stepped a couple of their big lads before an audacious offload to George Bambrick. The veteran back rower carried a defender over with him for the try. Conversion added by Farley for 7-0.
We were not on top for long though as errors invited pressure then a scrum penalty lifted our opponents. They got further joy with a soft penalty and then finally scored. Harry Tankard coming out of the line and making a big hit, dislodging the ball from the attacker. However, it was adjudged that the ball had gone backwards and was scooped up by an Aldwinian player. Only one pass needed and they went in for a converted try 7-7.
The second quarter was about missed opportunities as Harry Tankard broke the line but the Aldwinians defenders did well to shut down passing lanes. Next Jonny Cotterill got an intercept and we were in behind them, on to move it wide but we lost the next ruck. Aldwininans looked to punish our missed opportunities. However, Andrew Kirton put a stop to that with a huge hit, driving the ball carrier back several metres. Another missed chance from us as a nice miss pass put Sam Busby in space however, we missed the last pass.
A poor shot on Cam Wallace at a ruck got the pack fired up again, took some time for the two packs to be parted. Not sure how a yellow card as the prop came through and hit him whilst Wallace had his head down looking at the ball. We went to the corner and got a rolling maul going which Aldwinians collapsed. Penalty try awarded and a yellow card issued. 14-7.
An Aldwininans player took the ball and rushed up to half way and took quick kick off. A game between three lads broke out whilst Mr Morrison blew his whistle to get the kick off retaken. Their lad was fuming but all became evident when at half way the ref ensured that the correct player leave the field as the prop game back on and the hooker was told it was he who was carded.
From the kick off Rob Baldwin bounced in field and Busby was away again, this time it was great defence that prevented Max Cook from going in. We kept the heat on and the boys hammered away at the line. Eventually, there was some an isolated defender. Cam Wallace shaped to pass and then had a dart, placing the ball right on the try line for the score. 19-7 up.
That was to be the half time score although we were perhaps a bit lucky at the end. An Aldwinian scrum right in front of our posts was free kicked to end the half.
Johnny McSorley on for Morgan Scrace, an important 40 mins in his legs after his comeback last week. Darren Kelly on for George Bambrick and Sam Evans on for Sam Busby who went into this game with a leg injury from Percy Park. Although he was straight back on as Cam Wallace took another whack, this time bloodied from a stray boot.
There was a nice breeze behind our backs and Josh Farley made the most of it. A towering spiral bomb went up which their left winger never got under. The ball bouncing into touch for a 50/22 just five metres from the try line. Huge swing for the boys to see a. clearance like that. We didn't make the most of it though as a Sam Cleife line break once again went unfinished. Cam Wallace patched up and back on.
The third quarter was unfortunately once again about us squandering chances - perhaps last weeks game against Acklam wasn't the greatest of prep as we missed another chance with a scrum in front of the posts free kicked, and had two tries ruled out for double movements,
Aldwinians then used this to go again. They looked in for all money when their big lad hit a hard line however, Michael Searle threw himself into his legs smashing him into the ground. Andrew Kirton jamming on the ball for the steal. The respite was brief as Aldwinians backs countered and they then hot the gain line. We missed a one on one tackle and they went in. Game on 19-14 Novos.
Our opponents were on a roll and proving a handful, especially their blond back three lad who was beating defenders with ease. We thought we had turned them over but were penalised. With 20 mins to go they chose to take a shot at goal which would've made it 19-17. Fortunately, the kick drifted wide and we cleared our lines.
Cam Wallace put in a telling kick over a ruck which Sam Busby got after turned the ball over at the ruck. We won a penalty and went to the corner. Trademark Novos rolling maul with a couple of backs joining - unlike the Park game Sion Gittins managed to not move the ball pack and he scored. 24-14 and ten to play.
We were now on top and looking confident. Josh Farley put in a big clearance kick to get us back down the field. Big scrum penalty on Jonny McSorleys side lifted the boys even more. On attack we over threw a lineout, importantly Darren Kelly put his body on the line to take a whack and win possession. Dylan Gittins took the next carry and off loaded at the line for his brother to bust through. Sion Gittins raced onto the last man, trademark Gittins hips weren't quite enough this time. However, we finished how we started with a sick off load to Max Cook for the try. Conversion added to make the final score 31-14.
Thank you to Adam Morrison and his team for taking charge of the game. Another good display of reffing - tough on the high shots and incredibly consistent in his rulings.
Aldwinians - thank you for the game. A very good set piece with a powerful scrum, a great lineout that we struggled to get near most of the day. In addition, your seven was everywhere and the blonde fella in the backs was exciting to watch. Able to win his one on ones despite the fact that he seemed to be carrying an injury. At 19-14 and you guys kicking for the posts it did start to look like you were going to roll over us.
Vos - job done. Pretty wasteful in attack at times but with the energy in our defence, pride in our unbeaten home record it didnt matter. We spent the majority of the game in their half as we had hoped. Next week it is home semi final time as Crewe & Nantwich arrive at Sutherland Park. Last season we got to the same stage, one game away from Twickenham as we lost to Stamford away. This is a chance in a life time opportunity so might as well take it lads.
Up the Vos !
