The sun was shining and the pitch was fast - all things pointing toward another high scoring fixture between the two clubs.
Our opponents were unlucky not to beat Ponteland last week and they started they stronger - dominating possession in the first five mins. Eventually, they scored a good try down the near touch line and an even better conversion putting them seven points up.
The score stung us into action with Lewis Chater pulling the strings and Ben Jubb making a line break for Sam Busby to race through, equalling the record held by Jonny Ward. Conversion added by Michael Searle.
We finally had some possession and tried to pick up the pace of the game. From a transition Jonny Cotterill moved the ball to space as Michael Searle fed Lewis Chater who then put Sam Cleife away. The well finished try was again converted by Searle for 14-7 Vos.
The boys hit a real purple patch with Max Cook shifting the ball quickly from the base of the ruck - we went down the short side with a 3 v 2. Ben Jubb spotted the defender bite in and threw a lovely cut out pass for talented youngster, Jonny Cotterill to go in for his first 1st xv try. Incredible side line conversion from Michael Searle to push us out to 21-7.
Whilst the side was missing some key players those stepping in enjoyed the opportunity. Last years top try scorer Lewis Chater was thriving in the opportunity to play 10 in the absence of Josh Farley. On 31 mins he raced onto an inside ball to scorch in from 50m out with the try once again converted by Searle. Making the half time score 28-7 to Vos.
All three subs on as Ant McQuillin came on for Dave Medgjigbodo-Lawson who had scrummaged well and made some telling carries. The Sutherland Park saw Callum Todd for the first time as the Northumbria Uni hooker was deployed as a back rower for Simeon Archibald. Finally, Alex Douglas came on at 9 for Max Cook who looked very comfortable in a rare outing at 9.
The boys scored straight from the kick off as we gambled and moved the ball wide. Lovely lads from Ant McQuillan led to a 2 v 1 and Sam Cleife raced in for his second of the day. Conversion added by Searle from under the posts for 35-7. This seemed to take the wind out of Rockcliff who had now stopped going behind the posts after our long distance tries.
As such, we went bang bang as the next kick off we gambled, Lewis Chater looking to move the ball to the far touch line. Then with the Rockcliff defence caught in no mans land Michael Searle threw a huge miss pass for us to get to the far touchline - Lewis Chater the beneficiary this time. Conversion added by Searle for 42-7.
Then come the moment we have been waiting for - Sam Busby breaking the club try scoring record. This occurred after a telling Ben Jubb line break. The centre bursting down the middle of the field with defenders struggling to keep up. Unselfishly, Jubb threw a wide pass for at Sam Busby to hit in stride. Shout out to Jonny Ward who had held the record and is still scoring tries but for Morpeth now. Another beautiful conversion by Michael Searle, perhaps inspired by his brother watching from the side line. 49-7.
Fair play to Rockcliff who never gave up all afternoon - they had a great 10-15 mins and scored another fine try to make it 49-12 and thoughts turned to them getting an unlikely bonus point for four tries. However, we were determined to deny them the bonus point as were annoyed they got a league point in the 77-26 win earlier in the season.
Lewis Chater was really pulling the strings as he put Sam Busby into a gap. Busby raced into the Rockcliff half and could probably have stepped the 15 if he was inclined. However, he delivered a nice pass to Adam Lambert to make it back to back tries in the last two games. Conversion successful by Michael Searle.
We then scored a rare individual try as Max Cook took a ball at 9 from the lineout. Whilst exploring the seam in the defence he chose to chip over the line and ran through to regather the ball for the try. Lewis Chater kicking the conversion thus denying Michael Searle a perfect record of tries to conversions. Searle sitting on the sideline after getting 10 mins in the bin for a deliberate knock on. Vos 63-12 up now.
The Rockcliff lads have not won a game this year but there attitude can not be questioned. With the score blowing out their only focus was trying to get four tries again. This was on the cards when their 9 who had a very good game burst through to score a try which was also converted. The backed this up by getting back into our half and were camped on our line. It would've been easy for the Novos lads to let them score in a game that was won a long time ago. However, George Bambrick's men responded with a turnover on their line to deny Rock their bonus point.
Instead it was Novos that finished back on top as we had a scrum in rock cliff's 22. The backs have been on fire for the last couple of weeks and ran another wonderful shape. With Rockliff looking at the lines of running Ben Jubb decided to show and go and went over untouched, Searle out of the sin bin added the easy conversion. 70-19.
Appropriately it was left to Sam Busby who set up the last try with another clean line break for Ben Jubb to tear in from 60m out. Michael Searle once again converting to finish with 20 points on the day having kicked 10 out of the 11 conversions. Final score 77-19.
Thank you to Greg Dawson for taking charge of the game - a very good display. Greg has a great feel for the game, excellent comms and we are very lucky to have such a good ref dropping down to level 7 to run the game.
Rockcliff boys - you showed an incredible attitude over the two games playing some great running rugby. With your last two games at home I am adamant that you are more than capable of beating Acklam and Darlington. We have all had tough seasons before and your willingness to keep fronting up should be applauded. Good luck boys.
Novos boys, we have a week off next week before finishing off with Medicals and Acklam before visiting Meds again for a cup match. Loads still to play for as todays win puts us back into 2nd place. Be great if we could hang onto that spot as it helps with retainment and recruitment for next season, helps our players stay in form as they try and get in Northumberland U20's and the Senior side.
See you all at training on Tuesday - couple of new lads due down so get there and make sure they enjoy their first contact with the club.
Finally, good luck to our Colts who play Rockliff in the Plate Final tomorrow at Percy Park.
Up the Vos !
