Another home win for the boys - just Acklam standing in the way of an unbeaten league season at Fortress Vos. Next week the lads need just one league point to ensure they finish ahead of Ryton and win the league.
We started strong, not wanting a makeshift Medicals side to gain any confidence. The kick off was recovered by Max Cook and we straight on the attack. Nice rewind of play and Rob Baldwin carried down the short side, then rolled a lovely off load inside to Dylan Gittins for the try. 5-0.
Meds had a couple of mins pressure but the boys kept them at bay until Rob Baldwin got the steal at a ruck. We went down the other end of the field with a Max Cook and Josh Farley counter attack. After some fine team play on the gain line Farley threw a lovely miss pass for Cook to score in the corner. 10-0.
We were finding plenty of space out wide as well as able to dominate the gain line battle through Louis Matthews, Rob Baldwin and Michael Searle. A Josh Farley miss pass saw Sam Busby put Sam Bird down the side line. He kicked ahead and Busby won the race to the ball, slapping it inside to Cameron Wallace. He then offloaded the ball back to Bird for a try under the posts. Conversion add by Farley. 17-0.
Our next score came from a Rob Baldwin lineout win and a Harry Tankard line break. With players either side of him he found Max Cook who stepped two defenders for the score. Conversion added by Farley for 24-0.
The boys went 21-0 with a great try after a Louis Matthews line break and a Jonny Cotterill lineout steal won us territory and possession. Thirty metres out from the line Rob Baldwin secured another lineout. Michael Searle got us over the gain line and we rewind the ball down the blindside. Max Cook stood his man up and put Baldwin in the corner. Wonderful sideline conversion from Farley 31-0.
We were totally dominant around the park and on 30 mins the game had its first scrum. Novos won the scrum penalty to pile the pressure on the Medicals pack.
Medicals did finally find a groove and upped the tempo of their play, scoring a great try to make it 31-5. They had a purple patch and we were under pressure - conceding a yellow card to Josh Farley for a deliberate knock on. We responded though to deny them entry to our 22m with another scrum penalty. However, Meds won the ball back and attacked again as we received our second yellow card for a deliberate knock on. This time by David Medjigbodo-Lawson. Meds made the most of the space and scored a good try. 31-12.
We regathered our efforts as the 13 men of Novos went up the pitch on the back of some fine play by Max Cook, Dylan Gittins and Sion Gittins. Eventually, Jonny Cotterill crashed over taking three defenders with him. Vos up 38-12 after the conversion by Michael Searle.
Medicals had the final say of the half with a great try to make it 38-17 at half time.
George Bambrick on for Jonny Cotterill to rest up before his county U20's game on Sunday.
It was all Novos for the 3rd quarter of the game as Andrew Kirton won a lineout deep in Med's half. Louis Matthews piled over the gain line bumping off three defenders. Kirton got his hands back on the ball 5 metres out and took three defenders over with him for the score.43-17.
Medicals were trying to up the tempo however, a quick tap was read by Dylan Gittins, plucking the ball out of the air and rounding the winger for an individual try. Farley added the conversion for 50-17.
The next score was another cracker as Sion Gittins punched on a Meds overthrow at their lineout. Michael Searle pulled the ball back to Josh Farley - great cut out pass to Sam Busby who rounded two defenders for his first of the day. 55-17.
From the kick off we went back on attack after an Ant McQuillin turnover and a run byLouis Matthews bouncing about four lads. A deliberate knock on penalty allowed Josh Farley to reel off a 50m kick down the line. From the lineout George Bambrick crashed over for an easy score. 60-17.
We scored straight from the kick off as Josh Farley sat down two lads with his footwork. He then kicked ahead and Sam Busby won the race to the ball to push the scoreline out to 65-17.
Louis Matthews scored our next try with a quick tap and beat three tired defenders for the try. Conversion added by Farley 72-17.
It wasn't all one way traffic though as Medicals scored a nice rewind try of their own 72-22. Last try's the winner ? Nope, Vos sprung back into action with a Louis Matthews pull to Josh Farley who put in Sam Busby for his hat trick. Final score 77-22.
Thanks to Adam Morrison for taking charge of the game - a good performance with accurate decisions.
Meds lads - never easy for you to play round Easter break with all your students away. However, you've had a good season finishing in the top four. Something to build on for next season. Hopefully, we will find an opportunity to play a friendly at pre season to ensure the McQuillin jug gets played for.
Novos lads - nearly there, feels like it's done but it is not. Huge cup game on Wednesday at Percy Park and then we will try and find a competitive side to play Acklam. They have been suffering of late but hopefully the promise of a few beers in the sheds, and a watered down side will provide a competitive fixture on the final day.
Huge congrats to the 2's who kept the league on the line with an away win at Consett. In addition, what a cup win for our 3's on Saturday. Beating Nth Shields by two points for Ian Woods men to claim their second cup win in three seasons.
Up the Vos !
