Call went out early for the lads to be on time as the clubs head coach would be attending the fixture. Amazing to see the majority of the squad on time at the club. Although those that were running late clearly just messaged in saying they were going direct now rather than arrive late ! Only 2-3 lads MIA with one arriving directly at Jarrow to our surprise and even more amusement when Ben Trotter and Tom Webster turned up mins before kick off. Plenty of grumbling that the blue 1st team kit was too tight for some of our athletes - some attendance at training would surely sort that out !
We scored off the kick off as Stewart Wilson put James White in some space and he broke down the outside. He then put a lovely pass back inside for Wilson to score out wide. Conversion attempt saw a lot of boys back away so up stepped Harvey Gadsden for what must have been his first kick of the season. The ball left his foot and briefly entered the 22m before corkscrewing behind him.
From the kick off Michael Scott bounced a few lads and got us back into Jarrow's half. We eventually got 10m from the try line and then crossed it as Christian Selkirk went blind. Most of the lads shouted at him thinking there was an overlap the other way. However, Selkirk had spotted James White on the short side by himself. Untouched try, great decision. 10-0 up.
Nice try for our third as Stewart WIlson gathered a goal line drop out and ran it back with a strong carry. The ball was moved right via Christian Selkirk with an impression of Carlos Spencer with a through the legs pass. James Bass onto Louis Oliver who made the line break and put in Max Mallon to put us 15-0 up.
From the kick off Rich Zabrocki ran it straight and made some yards. James Bass then put away Max Mallon who stepped two defenders to score under the posts. Our first conversion added by Harvey Gadsden for 22-0.
Another big carry from Michael Scott from the kick off, followed up by Evan Dare who gave an awesome off load to Jack Hutt. There was still 50m to go, but Hutt tore through the Jarrow defence and rounded the fullback for the try. Again, converted by Gadsden for 29 unanswered points.
We went 36-0 up moments later as James White dance through the line. Offload off the floor and the Jarrow lads stopped however, the ref deemed it back by Jarrow as Harvey Gadsden played to the whistle. He kicked it ahead regatherd it to score under the posts. He then converted his own try.
Our next score came from a beautiful lineout connection from Rich Zabrocki to Jack Hutt. Despite two horror passes from the base of the ruck Hutt made a line break and Louis Oliver raced up in support and off load to Harvey Gadsden for the try. Conversion added by Gadsden 43-0.
Just before the half time whistle Jarrovians sprung into life via their 9 who'd been a running threat all day. Awesome cover tackle from Harvey Gadsden put the ball carrier into touch - half time. Important chats were held and changes made to try and get Jarrow into the game as a couple of our lads put the Jarrow shirt on. Got to love grassroots rugby.
Jarrovians were a much tougher proposition in the second half and scored a nice team try. Conversion added as they went ahead in the second half 7-0. We quickly replied as Rhys Gibbons went through a gap for the try. Conversion added by Alfie Bowman for 7-7 second half.
A back and forth second period continued as Jarrow smashed away at our line. Some incredible defence from Joe Sayer in what was his first game of rugby, ever. He smashed two lads who looked dead set on scoring - awesome Joe ! His stalwart defence led to Jarrow 10 making a horrendous decision. Unable to breach the line he put up an up and under 5m from the try line. The ball fell to Ted Old, Hail Mary pass which bounced into the grateful arms of Max Mallon. He then ran 100m to score a try - hearbreaking for Jarrow who shouldve scored. Conversion added by Bowman to put us 14-7 up in the second half.
Alex Cokeley entered the fray and smashed a few lads before Jarrow scored their second try of the day. A great show of commitment from their boys after a one way score line in the first haf. 14-12 us in to the latter part of the game. The boys had some decent banter all day and this continued as our very own Christian Selkirk sat down Alfie Bowman.
We scored again as Harry Mason went down the middle. Great conversion by Ben Trotter, noticeably not clapped by 3's captain Ian Wood who at the time had a Jarrow shirt on. Fine ?
The boys had time for Tom Webster on debut to make a line break and throw a great off load. However, the last try went to Rhys Gibbons with a dream try, racing in from 100m. The truth is he stumbled over the line in a tackle to make the final score 67-12.
Thank you to the ref who set a good tone - dealt with foul play and made some excellent decisions.
Jarrow lads - never gave up and a great second half effort. 18 put in some huge shots and the 9 was a real threat all game.
Vos lads - nice to get the win and avenge our home defeat to what was a much stronger side earlier in the season.
Up the Vos !
