Match Preview

Magnus Leask15 Apr - 20:00

North Shields arrive at Sutherland Park on Saturday for the final of the Northumberland County Cup 4. The sides did play out a league game on the weekend, won by Novos. However, both sides are expected to be much changed from that game.

It is always a fine balance when selecting a side for a final - you want to try and compete to win whilst ensuring that those boys who have played in earlier rounds are selected.

The management team have been amazing this season ensuring that the boys obtained a winning record whilst enjoying each others company. Andrew Croft and Steve Gittins have provided a great environment with some old school values, vital playing opportunities for some players who were completely new to the game. In addition, Ian Wood has led the boys to another final - one which this time they are determined to win.

Very experienced front row out in Chris Thompson, Rich Zabrocki and Wood himself. Sure to be able to compete against what is expected to be a heavy Nth Shields pack. The tight five is completed with Michael Scott and Chris Ward. Scott will have fond memories of the last final and Ward will want to ensure he writes another page in the clubs great history.

The back row is strong for a threes side - Louis Oliver, Old Novocastrian will be everywhere along with Jack Hutt who has had a memorable season with us. Tom Storey finishes off the back row and will want his childhood club to get their hands on the trophy.

A talented back line is assembled with Christian Selkirk and Ben Trotter charged with pulling the strings. Selkirk will boss his forwards round the park whilst Trotter in his first season with us has been impressive. With the cup on the line we are lucky enough to have our strongest centre pairing available in Stewart Wilson and James Bass. The pair last played together against Jarrow and were unstoppable at times in that match.

Regular wingers Jay Turton and Ross Cleminson will start outwide and it is hoped that Max Mallon will be fit to take his place at fullback.

The squad shows some real depth with players of the standard of Shaun O'Connell, Stevie Thompson, Eddie Mason, Sully Ismail, Evan Dare and Mark Hemmings.

So please get down and support the boys - be amazing to see them get the win.

Up the Vos !
