Darlington were the latest side to attempt to breach Novos watertight defensive line and the latest in a long line to fail to do so.
With some previously regular players unavailable Novos had to reshuffle and Centre Janette Shaw was moved to stand off, back rowers Kate Disley and Sel Makin at scrum half and centre, there was also a first start of the season for Drea Lee in the 2nd row.
Darlington started well making surging runs at Novos defence, They had a huge pack but the girls were fronting up well and consistently knocked back wave after wave of Darlington pressure. Eventually after about 10 minutes Helen Kane was able to send a long kick away to relieve the pressure. Darlington came back again but again Novos withstood heavy pressure and from a turnover Kate Disley made a superb break and with support from Sel Makin and Fran Mockford broke free to setup a ruck in the Darlington half. Strong forward running from Emily Yarrow and Christine Miller was well supported and Diz managed to fire out a quick pass for skipper Janette Shaw whose gutsy run gave Novos the first score. Darlington came back again but Novos held firm again to reach half time 7 - 0 ahead.
The second half was a different story - Darlington visibly tired from throwing all they had at Novos and a heroic effort from the pack saw them take the game to their much larger opponents, great counter rucking from Drea Lee and Alice Workman smashed Darlo backwards and a break from Amy Ross found Diz who passed to Janette Shaw to score her 5th try in 2 games.
Novos continued to dominate and went close to scoring again but couldnt find a way through. Any chance of a counter attack thwarted by solid defence - typified by Lucy Mcleans tackle on the big Darlo six.
A great win for our girls and another superb shut out. The win borne of sheer guts and determination left coaches Fife and Addison very pleased.
